All cats in our program are cared for in temporary foster homes until they are adopted. Cats are first tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) to ensure they are negative prior to placing them in foster homes. Cats are also vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Countless innocent cats and kittens end up abandoned, hungry and homeless, sometimes injured or abused. F.A.T. KATZ seeks to help these cats by taking them into our foster program, giving them love, medical attention and finding them loving, permanent homes of their very own.

Comprised of a group of dedicated volunteers and fosters from all walks of life, we bring a total combined dozens of years in animal rescue and management.

Volunteer
We can always use help at our adoption or fundraising events, but you can help on your own time as well! We need people to answer phones or emails, and we can always use social media help.

Foster
We are always looking for foster homes because that allows us to rescue more cats! Fostering allows cats to blossom in a comfortable home and become accustomed to a loving home-life if they came from a bad situation.

Say hi!
If you have no time or space or money, we can ALWAYS use help forcing the algorithm to see and share us!

“Oh, I don’t think I could foster. I just couldn’t bear to part with any of them once I have their cute, fuzzy little bodies in my house/my arms/my life.”
This sentiment is a frequent response when we ask folks whether they would be willing to foster cats or kittens. It is an honest and valid statement. Because no matter how long you foster, or how many cats come and go through your loving arms and your wonderful home, there are always times when it is hard to part with a foster cat.

But, for foster parents, the parting is bittersweet; bitter because it is a loss, which has to be dealt with, and sweet because the cat they so loved found a loving and permanent home. Ultimately, without foster homes, many cats wouldn’t have the second--or third!--chance that they deserve. So many cats already end up abandoned on the street, sick, hungry, homeless, or in shelters where their fates would be very uncertain.

We try to help out by taking on some of these needy cats and taking them into our homes.

Foster parenting cats is a commendable, worthwhile endeavor. It is not without heartache, for some cats don’t make it. It is not without work, because you have to give love, attention and care to your foster cat just as you would your own. But, through it, you grow as a person, learning to let go when you have to, learning what your “specialty” is when it comes to cats, and getting the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing your part to help your community, and to help innocent and needy cats.If you think that you could provide a foster home for a cat, please call 505-293-2830, email FatKatzAbq@Gmail.com, or complete and mail a foster parent application to F.A.T. Katz, P.O. Box 90394, ABQ, NM 87199-0394.

One of our volunteers will contact you to discuss foster parenting. Usually foster families have to supply food for their foster cats as donations of food are in short supply. Whenever food is available, F.A.T. Katz will be happy to supply you with some.

Any cat that you would be asked to foster will have already tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV. All possible precautions are taken to ensure that cats placed into foster homes are healthy and do not have any communicable diseases. However, it is possible that a cat will be a carrier of a parasite, disease or virus. Foster families must agree not to hold F.A.T. Katz responsible for any illnesses brought into their home.

Fostering has so many benefits for homeless cats AND the fosters who love them
  • Essential Socialization and Rehabilitation: Cats receive personalized attention, helping shy, feral, or traumatized cats learn to trust people. This is crucial for kittens learning to play and behave.
  • Speeds Up Medical Recovery: A calm, home environment is ideal for cats healing from injuries, surgeries, or illnesses.
  • Reduces Stress for the Cat: Shelters can be stressful; a foster home helps cats relax, reducing illness risks and improving their mental wellbeing.
  • Improves Adoptability: Fosters learn the cat’s personality, quirks, and needs in a home setting, providing valuable information to potential adopters.
  • Benefits for the Foster Parent: Fosters enjoy the companionship of a cat without a permanent commitment, which is great for those who cannot commit to long-term ownership. It is also rewarding to help a cat find a forever home.
  • Specialized Care: Experienced fosters can save neonatal or "pee-wee" kittens (2–8 weeks old) that require round-the-clock feeding and cannot survive without foster care.

We cover ALL medical expenses and can supply food and litter.
